I read in an article a couple months ago about two different kinds of vegetarians-junk food vegetarians and whole foods vegetarians. The junk food vegetarians enjoy things like cheese pizza and ice cream while the whole foods vegetarian eats mostly vegetables and fruits, more healthy foods and less of the junk food variety.

When I first saw the labeling for the two types, I found it kind of interesting. I was wondering what kind of vegetarian I would be labeled as. Which kind are you, junk food or whole foods?

I'm a junk food vegetarian, and I'm not ashamed of it.

Is the article online?
First of all, I think that is slightly mislabled. I'm pretty sure that most vegetarians enjoy ice cream and pizza. They just eat it in moderation.

I'm the whole foods kind but I eat the other things from time to time.....that's one of the bonus things of being a vegetarian....you can have more junk food!

I have to admit we love our junk food. Hubby's weakness is pizza. I am a raving chocoholic.
Takes all kinds to make a vegetarian world, I guess.

I guess the problem for some is not eating enough of the right kind of filling foods. I know newbie vegetarians who often say they still feel hungry, so they tend to grab high-carb or sweet snacks. The ones who have stuck with it longer seem to fill up more with high-protein snacks, like legumes.

Meat eaters could be divided that way too, some eat lots of fresh whole food others eat junk. Most of us fit somewhere in the middle whether we include meat in our diet or not.

I agree with you Justontime.

These labels can also be tagged onto meat eaters too. I think it's a little unfair. I mean who doesn't prefer the stuff thats bad for you?

@urs1: I think the article is online, but unfortunately, I can't find it. Sorry. If you run a search or something, I'm sure you'll come up with a hit. It may have been a Yahoo article.

I never thought about classifying meat eaters in the same way. When I was younger, my main reason for becoming a vegetarian was so I could eat more sweets. When I got older, I found out about diabetes. My plans have definitely changed, but I do love to snack...on whole wheat grains and naturally sweet fruit.

Enna, I found a similar one. It's accurate. If you find yourself getting hungry, you might want to add in a piece of cheese for the protein. Some whole grain crackers and a piece of string cheese and I'm as happy as the cow on the package!

The reason that vegetarians are singled out for junk food is because many use it as an excuse as to why they are eating the junk.

True. Many people will say "oh I can't eat that" because they would rather just eat the cookies.

True vegetarians strive to eat healthy.

True, but I loved junk food before I even became a vegetarian. Now, I'm eating a healthier "junk" food. It's really made me think about my snacking habits, and they've really improved.

it is ok to eat junk food once a while to satisfy your urge or cravings.
