3 cups water
2 cups dried brown lentils
1/2 teaspoon salt, divided
1 cup diced onion
2/3 cup ketchup
1/3 cup maple syrup
1/4 cup prepared mustard
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Combine water, lentils, and 1/4 teaspoon salt in a large saucepan. Bring to a boil; cover, reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer 20 minutes. Drain lentils in a colander over a bowl, reserving 1 cup cooking liquid.

Combine lentils and diced onion in an 11x7-inch baking dish. Combine 1/4 teaspoon salt, reserved cooking liquid, ketchup, and the remaining ingredients. Pour the ketchup mixture over the lentil mixture, stirring to combine. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.

That sounds interesting. Do you always boil lentils as opposed to letting them sit in water?

I've never really cooked with dried beans or legumes. I'm not sure which family the lentil's in.

that does sound interesting. I've never really been a big lentil lover, I guess they just come with a rather hair shirt holier than thou imagie. but I know how good for you they are & I'm keen on all things BBQ so i might give that a go. Thanks!

lentils are pulses and they come in different forms. The soft ones like red lentils can be cooked quickly but for green and brown lentils they are best left soaking overnight and rinsed well before using.

Wow! Sounds like a great recipe. I like lentil soup but I struggle to find other uses for them. I'm really curious about how the vanilla and allspice will effect the flavor.

I am not too big on lentils, but I will give this a try. Sounds good enough. My Oma made the best lentil soup, and I have never cared for anything else with lentils in it since.

This sounds very good and I don't think there's ever been a barbecued *anything* that I didn't like. How do you serve this... do you put it over something, or eat it like a soup or... ???
