Some people become a vegetarian for health, but others do it for moral reasons. A lacto ovo vegetarian refers to a diet that eschews animal flesh but still includes eggs, dairy products (milk, cheese etc.) and honey. It can be a very healthy and balanced diet, provided that you pay close attention to eating the right foods.

Lacto-ovo vegetarianism is sometimes recommended as a dietary therapy for a variety of conditions, including heart disease, cancer, diabetes, stroke, high cholesterol, obesity, osteoporosis, hypertension, gout, gallstones, kidney stones, ulcers, colitis, hemorrhoids, premenstrual syndrome, anxiety, and depression. A 2001 study showed that vegetarian diets often contain more copper than nonvegetarian diets. Copper is an important nutrient often lacking in today's typical diets. Lacto-ovo vegetarianism is an economical and easily implemented preventive practice. It does, however, require self-education regarding an adequate diet in those who adopt it.

Never heard of it below thought all vegeterians were alike except some ate dairy and some didn't.

I had never heard of this name before. I to just thought vegetarians were mostly the same except some at fish and eggs and such and some did not. Learn something new every day. Thanks.

I too never heard of this term ever before in my life, I felt I am a vegetarian which meant I can have eggs and dairy products but never knew of this terminology that can be used to opt out such minor differences.

I think then your friend might come into a different category of vegetarians. I am not so sure but I guess he/she might fall into another vegetarian category. Another thread in this forum explained the different types of vegetarians.

Eating fish isn't typically vegetarian, but it is a gateway to/from vegetarianism. I recently added fish to my diet from being fully vegetarian (as there are some good reasons why eating fish is very different than other livestock) but I still do not eat any red meat or poultry.
